Jeremy and I met on February 19, 2009 we knew from the start that we wanted to be together and start a family of our own. So in October of 09' we started trying, we were so excited that we told our families that we were planning to expand our family and to plan for a baby within the near future.
We married February 19, 2010 it was one of the best days in our lives. We were still very optimistic that a baby would come soon.
Little did we know it wasn't going to be that easy. After trying for 7 months in May 2010 I knew something wasn't working right, because I was having unbearably pain around my left ovary. So we went to our primary care provider to find out what the problem was and get help TTC (trying to conceive). At that time she ran the basic hormone tests on both of us and ordered a ultrasound to see where the pain was coming from. The test came back that my PCOS was incredibly out of control and my hormone levels were all over place. The ultrasound showed a small cyst on he left ovary which was causing the pain. Since we were TTC our Dr. referred us to and OBGYN who handled TTC couples and who could help get my hormones under control.
May/June 2010 we met with the OB, he put me on Metformin to start controlling the Pcos and I started a prenatal vitamin. He also sent Jeremy for his first semen analysis (SA) at the U of U the results were normal so around the end of June he started me on Clomid (is a non-steroidal ovulatory stimulant used to treat ovulatory dysfunction and polycystic ovary syndrome in women) with timed intercourse and ovulation predictor kits (Opk's). We did this treatment for 6 months none of which resulted in a pregnancy. December 2010 we had a follow up with our OB we discussed our options and we decided it was time to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist (fertility doctor).
January 2011 we had our consult with a Reproductive Endo. Doctor at The Reproductive Care Center in Sandy, Utah. At the consult we discussed the next step in treatment which was to start a low dose of a new fertility drug "Femara", timed intercourse with opk monitoring and he ordered tons of blood work for both of us. In February I did a HSG test (hysterosalpingogram) which came back normal and Jeremy was given a SA w/Kruger we were told that the count was great but the morphology (the amount of sperm that are of normal size & shape of the sperm) was 6% and that 5% or less in morphology that we would need to do IVF
So we did two rounds of the Femara treatment plan and in April he did another SA w/kruger that came back with a 5% morphology our doctor at that time changed the treatment plan.
Femara with timed Intrauterine insemination (IUI). This plan consisted of taking Femara on cycle days 3-7 along with Metformin taking a OPK test to see what the most fertile days would be when we got a positive surge on the opk call the doctor office to schedule the IUI which was scheduled 24-48 hours after the surge. At that time our insurance wasn't going to cover any of the cost so we needed to save the money up for our first ever IUI it ended up costing around $1,000.00 (included IUI and sperm prep not including blood work and ultrasounds that was sent out to insurance). Once we got my body working like it was suppose to we did our first IUI on Jeremy's birthday August 5, 2011 two days later the doctors office called to inform us that they did a SA and that this IUI wouldn't take because the morphology was at a 2% and that we would not be able to concieve on our own without In Vitro Fertilization with Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF w/ICSI).
It was a hit or miss with us when Jer was working I wasn't then when they finally got my body on track his didn't want to anymore. As you could imagine we were heart broken we barley saved enough money for one IUI let alone IVF. So at that time we decided we needed a break to collect our feelings and see what other options we could do before going down that road.
